Developer David Devine’s 24-storey luxury high-rise proposed for North Burleigh is poised to get under way after winning approval from the Gold Coast City Council.

Developer David Devine’s 24-storey luxury high-rise proposed for North Burleigh is poised to get under way after winning approval from the Gold Coast City Council.

The $430-million tower, dubbed Burly, being developed by Devine’s DD Living will rise from a prominent 2024sq m site at 264-268 The Esplanade.

The tower designed by Koichi Takada Architects comprises 101 two, three and three-bedroom plus multi-purpose room apartments, and four-bedroom penthouses.

Devine said Burly was inspired by six-star private residences around the world and the “beautiful Burleigh Heads beach”.

We called the building Burly to evoke a sense of nostalgia as it was the original spelling of Burleigh back in the 1840s,” he said.

Koichi Takada said the building would set a new benchmark for beachfront living in Burleigh Heads.

“Our architectural design is inspired by the whitewash meeting the sand and the facade echoes the natural curvature of the coastline,” he said.

“We wanted to maximise the connection with nature and encourage residents to take advantage of the lifestyle within this subtropical climate.”

In October last year, Devine shelved plans for an apartment tower after acquiring an adjoining property, giving him the chance at a more ambitious development with a price tag nearly four times that of the first.

DD Living filed the Burly development application to replace plans for the $105-million Alba Residences, greenlit earlier in 2022 after acquiring the neighbouring 1012sq m site. The purchase doubled the footprint of the beachfront site.

“It’s not easy to amalgamate sites on The Esplanade, but when you do, it delivers a better result for both the apartment purchaser and the Gold Coast community as a whole,” the DD Living chief executive said at the time.

Construction is expected to start by the end of this year and completion is forecast for 2026.
